I've got a small independent publishing in Brno - Czech republic and I'm goin' to publish Visitation here this fall. And I look forward very much to publish it. As you maybe know the villa Tugendhat - center of Mawer's Glass Room - is located in our town - Brno, and the GR book was very succesfull in CR. I didn't read it yet, but after your comparison I'll read it soon. Anyway - Visitation is great, I like it from the first moment when I started to read it in German, and I believe that there is a "layer of depth" rarely seen in other books. I hope that czech readers will recognize it as well! Have a good time.
Adam Kubát
PS: Could you, please, post some links of the "much much better" reviews you mentioned? I can't see any weaknesses of that yours.Adam Kubáthttp://www.vakat.cznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008954639175647714.post-52023027853955181612011-05-04T13:53:26.041-04:002011-05-04T13:53:26.041-04:00oops -- I didn't mean to imply I read translat...oops -- I didn't mean to imply I read translated fiction because all of the stories start to resemble each other. I meant actually that there's such a huge and varied world of experience out there that there's little room for things sounding the same.NancyOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12027036137062767840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008954639175647714.post-89774020964746737642011-05-04T13:52:12.854-04:002011-05-04T13:52:12.854-04:00AmyI don't consider this a great review -- the...Amy
I don't consider this a great review -- there are so many good ones I saw after writing mine (usually common practice as I don't want to let anyone sway me in my thinking) that are much much better, mainly from people who've been in the literature arena forever. But thanks! I've been focusing more on translated fiction just for the reason you mentioned -- where all of the stories start to resemble each other. Visitation is vastly different. And I really think you'll enjoy The Glass Room once you read it. Thanks so much for commenting!NancyOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12027036137062767840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008954639175647714.post-27623790438249533752011-05-04T13:30:23.431-04:002011-05-04T13:30:23.431-04:00This book sounds fascinating. Sometimes I feel as if many of the book I'm reading begin to almost resemble each other. My reading can then become complacent, almost sluggish. I don't think that will happen with this book.
I've had The Glass Room by Simon Mawer on my tbr list for a while but haven't read it yet.

Thank you for a great review.Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09866342436745173619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008954639175647714.post-76612614200627891122011-05-03T07:08:04.352-04:002011-05-03T07:08:04.352-04:00I loved the Glass Room! When I started reading Visitation, I was surprised how much similarity there was between the two books, but really, this one (IMHO) has a layer of depth that Mawer's book doesn't have. I hope you like it!NancyOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12027036137062767840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008954639175647714.post-85898326906517012632011-05-03T05:43:08.393-04:002011-05-03T05:43:08.393-04:00This is next in my TBR pile and I am very pleased ...This is next in my TBR pile and I am very pleased to see that you've compared it to The Glass Room - a book I loved.
